New research from jobs website Adzuna has shown that one in three Australian jobs is at risk of automation by 2030. Increased developments in technology and machines are changing the work landscape and widening the skills gap. For employees to safeguard their future and adapt to the changes, there are five skills they should develop. These include:
1. Building a personal brand & taking credit for skills
Employees should build their own personal brand and get credit for every skill they have developed in their career. There is less importance on university degrees these days and more importance on what skills an employee has. Building a brand and a network of contacts will help lead a person to their next role.
2. Make friends with machines
People and machines are already working together in various ways, and it’s important to learn how technology can assist with a task rather than replace it. Changes in technology are helping to simplify tasks, save time and free up employees to do other things. The key is to work with technology rather than against it.
3. Be flexible
A key skill for employees will be flexibility and adapting their skills to change. Many organisations are looking for ways to integrate better with technology and workers will need to be flexible to these changes.
4. Develop multicultural skills
The current working landscape is full of employees with varied and complex identities and backgrounds. Remote employees, overseas offices and flexible contracts mean that employees are communicating in new ways such as through internal chat platforms or social media. This skill is important to be able to respond appropriately to many different colleagues and work efficiently in a dynamic team.
5. Having empathy
Empathy will be a key skill to have in navigating a changing workforce. Being able to understand other people’s situations, opinions and experiences will help to not only communicate better with them but create more diverse perspectives and efficient teams.
