Positivity for regional Australia farmers as new visa changes take effect in 2019.

In a joint media release the Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Simon Birmingham has announced a new campaign designed to attract more working holiday makers to Australia to support Australian farmers and boost tourism in regional areas.

“Working holiday makers are an essential part of Australia’s agricultural and tourism industries,” Minister Birmingham said.

The new campaign called “Australia Inc.” will run through the United Kingdom, France and Germany and target young people who are likely to consider overseas travel with temporary work.

  • The current two-year work and holiday visa option will increase to a three-year work and holiday visa option.

There are many other changes taking effect, such as an “increase in work period in Australia to nine months”. That is an increase from the current six-month restrictions.

“The recent enhancements to the work and holiday visa program were designed to support rural and regional areas,” says David Coleman, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs.

The changes to the work and holiday program will be effective from 1 July 2019.

In a separate announcement there are two new skilled regional provisional visas being introduced in November 2019.

  • Visa 1: “Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (provisional) visa: for people sponsored by an employer in regional Australia.
  • Visa 2: “Skilled Work Regional (provisional) visa: for people who are nominated by a State or Territory government or sponsored by an eligible family member to live and work in regional Australia.

Under the new visas, to be eligible for permanent residency the visa holder is required to live and work in regional Australia for three years.
