With the holiday season fast approaching, here are a few things you need to keep in mind when dealing with holiday leave.

  • Ensure you have a clear policy in place stating exactly what happens over the holiday period. This should include when leave can be taken and how many people can take leave at the time.
  • If you close over the holiday period, make sure your employees are aware of this ahead of time. Ensure all dates are clearly communicated and everyone is aware of how much annual leave will be used.
  • The holiday period is a great time to adopt a flexible workplace. Allowing employees to work from home means they take less leave and are also able to attend to family commitments.

An important thing to consider is whether to close your business over the holiday period or to operate on skeleton staff. How busy your business is at this time of year will impact this decision. Make sure that all employees are aware of what happens over the holiday period in advance and clearly communicate what is expected of them during this time.

Encourage your employees to enjoy themselves over their break. Allowing staff to take time off over this period allows them to recharge and come back refreshed and ready to work hard for the next year.

  • Boxing Day – 26 December
  • Additional Day for Christmas Day – 27 December
  • New Year’s Day – 1 January
  • Additional Day for New Year’s Day – 2 January
