Easter Break

With the Easter long weekend coming up fast, many employees will be putting in leave to take an extended holiday.

It can be difficult when running a small business to handle many employees taking leave at the same time. Here are some things to keep in mind when dealing with public holidays:
  • Consider all applications for leave. Some employees may have to take time off due to the surrounding school holidays or other family commitments.
  • Keep an open mind – if your business can survive for a few extra days on short staff, it is worth considering letting an employee take the extra time off.
  • Remember that for some people, Easter is more than a public holiday, it is a religious time during the year.
  • Consult with each employee requesting leave individually about why they are taking leave – leave around public holidays should be looked at on a case-to-case basis.

We all love a long weekend, and when the opportunity arises to make that time off last longer – without cutting into annual leave – many people will take it. Have a policy in place that clearly outlines how to take annual leave and the process to apply for it. This will make your life much easier when it comes to dealing with multiple requests for leave over the same time period.
