With Australia Day just around the corner, here are a few ways to prepare yourself for the annual “Australia Day sickie”.
  • Speak to your employees about the day in advance. While it can be tempting to ignore the upcoming public holiday in the hopes that employees will forget about it, the chances of that happening are slim. If you talk to your employees about your expectations beforehand, you can possibly avoid too many of them attempting to call in sick.
  • Offer them a different day off. If employees are insistent that they get the time off, offer them the Monday or another day off instead. This way you can ensure that there will still be enough employees turning up on the day to run the business smoothly.
  • Have clear policies and procedures surrounding sick leave and evidence required for time off. If your organisation requires a medical certificate for any sick leave taken, reinforce this policy ahead of time to warn employees off trying to pretend their hangover is the flu.

Remember, everyone wants to enjoy Australia Day and celebrate the beautiful country we live in. Try to be as accommodating as possible and remind employees that you are not trying to be a buzzkill, you simply have a business to run.
