The Fair Work Ombudsman has been monitoring workplace compliance in the horticulture industry. The release of the Harvest Trail Inquiry in 2018 reported widespread non-compliance in the sector particularly regarding underpayment. The Fair Work Ombudsman has been working with key stakeholders including major employers, unions, and grower bodies to build a culture of compliance in the horticulture industry.
Inspectors have been assessing the compliance of businesses in the sector, recording improvement in businesses that were found to be non-compliant during the inquiry and an improvement in the number of piece-rate agreements signed by workers.
Fair work inspectors issued compliance notices to 22 business who remained non-compliant recovering $64,134 for 279 employees. The inquiry has been prioritising breaches in wages and record keeping.
