The WA Government launches the first FIFO mental health code.



April 2nd 2019, Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston launched Australia’s first code of practice to help promote and maintain mentally healthy workplaces for FIFO workers in the resources and construction sectors.

The new code aims to address hazards and risk factors in FIFO workplaces and create a mentally healthy workplace for fly-in fly-out workers in resources and construction sectors.

In 2018 the Minister for Mental Health released the findings of a government-funded study in the experience and mental health of FIFO workers. Its findings were undeniably worrying as it found that FIFO workers experience higher levels of psychological distress than non-FIFO works.

Encouraging the drive-in change in mental health and extensively improving the general well-being of FIFO workers and their families, is the commitment of the McGowen Government as said by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston.

“A positive, mentally healthy workplace not only benefits employees but also enhances and organisation’s reputation for supporting and respecting its workforce,” Minister Johnston said.

“It’s especially pleasing the Mining Industry Advisory Committee and Commission for Occupational Safety and Health unanimously endorsed the code.”

Parts of the code encourage organisations to:

  • Adopt a risk management process to identify potential psycho-social hazards,
  • Establish a positive and supportive workplace culture
  • Provide suitable accommodation and rosters with enough time for rest and recreation.
