Key Tips for Working with Millennials

 

There are many myths surrounding the Millennial generation in the workplace. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking to hire the younger generation.

  • Depending on the date range chosen to look at millennials, you could be considering a person that has had their lives shaped by social media and technology. They could bring a fresh new perspective to the organisation, especially on the digital side.
  • Although millennials are thought to be a selfish generation, new research suggests that all younger generations are considered more narcissistic than the previous generation. Keep this in mind and try not to make too many generalisations when considering a millennial for your business.
  • Another study has shown that the biggest drawcard for a millennial to a company is the cultural fit. If you are looking to attract the younger generation, think about how they will fit in with the values of the company, and how your company will fit in with theirs.
  • Millennials are very entrepreneurial. In such a tough employment market, many young people are starting their own business ventures to ensure they have a job. This creative spirit and strong desire to achieve makes them hard workers willing to put the time in the help grow the business.

It is important to keep in mind that most research completed on the millennial generation is an average of the people within that generation. Steer clear of making too many generalisations and putting millennials into stereotypical categories. Embrace their use of technology and the skills they have that make them unique, and you will have a wonderful opportunity for your business to grow in the future.
