Tuesday July 24 is Lifeline’s Stress Down Day, an annual fundraising campaign aimed at reducing stress. Research shows that 90% of Australians need to stress less, with 74% of people reporting they were stressed from work. Workplace stress can be caused from things such as excessively high workloads, poor management, bullying or harassment, poor company culture or concerns about job security among many others. It is important for both employers and employees to recognise and manage stress in the workplace to help improve mental health, performance and overall workplace happiness.
ProcessWorx has identified five important tips to help manage stress in the workplace.
1. Accept change
Most work days include something unexpected happening such as changing deadlines, new opportunities or last-minute events. Being able to adapt to change by assessing the new situation and prioritising workloads will help to alleviate any stress that may arise.
2. Take five
If feelings of stress or frantic thinking start to build, take five minutes out of the work day to put it aside without judgement. Pause and be mindful for a moment, then take in your surroundings and observe what you can see, hear and touch. This will help to calm your thoughts and reassess the situation.
Employers should make their employees aware of what is happening in the company, so they do not think the worst. Employers should also communicate that support is available for anyone feeling stressed. In turn, employees who are feeling stressed should reach out to their employer – if they don’t know, they can’t help!
4. Support your health and well-being
Eating right, sleeping well and exercising are a crucial element in combating stress. Your outlook on stressful situations will change when you feel good about yourself, so take the time and effort to switch off from work and look after yourself and your body.
5. Go offline
Setting some work-life boundaries such as not checking work emails after hours or turning your phone off for a few hours can help keep your work and home lives separate and prevent workplace stress being brought home.
